Benny and Bob

Here it is, the Benny and the Jets band. No, that’s what I do at night, this is the Bob and Benny show. I know Benny and Bob does sound better, but saying Bob and Benny makes BOB feel good! So any way you cut it, it’s hot, exciting, and LIVE, as in Detroit Live Magazine. We are getting bigger all the time. Remember a strong media helps the music scène. Media helps the scène; a strong and exciting scène benefits us all. Clubs do better, bands do better, people have more fun, and life is better for all of us. If you know a club or business that is NOT in the magazine, show it to them. Tell them about us. Not only can they get an ad, for a great price and help their business, they in turn help our music and entertainment scène. They help keep Detroit Live!

My partner Bob Harris is celebrating his birthday. Happy Birthday Bob! Mick Jagger himself told Mr. Harris he is the Oldest Rolling Stones Fan. Bob has been part of the Detroit music scène since black and white TV. From being part of TV, radio, teen magazines, concerts, a promoter, an author, Bob really has done it all. And the cool thing is Bob Harris wants more. He is not done. He has tons of ideas from more books, to more concert promotions, movies, museums, even his “Oldest Rolling Stone Fan” song, which you can hear (for FREE) at www.myspace.com/oldestrollingstonefan. To book Bob, pitch him an idea, reminisce, or just wish him a Happy Birthday call his direct line at 734 399 8285. Recently Bob was interviewed on WJR radio. They talked about his book Motor City Rock & Roll of the 60s and 70s is now at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Very cool.

Bob had a great column idea. We always hear polls about the “Best Of.” Best Burger, Best Pizza, Best Musician, how about Best Bartender? Now I am not sure if that means best drink maker or hottest or how you decide best, but if you know him or her you might let us know.

Maggie the Bartender at the Redford Moose is one of our favorites. Fayleen at the Wayne Road pub is one of the Hottest. That girl at Rack and Roll, YES! Quit-N-Time is famous for Hot Bartenders. What is the girls name at Joe’s Prime Time? And that blonde at the All Around? Bullfrog not only has Hot Bartenders I think they have their own calendar? The Fiddle girls do it in BIKINIS, that’s hot. Cecil’s and TC Gaters very HOT. J Dubs, McNeill’s, Jackalope’s, Macgregor’s, Nic’s, Double OO, US-12, Malarkey’s, well you get the idea. Show this magazine to your favorite bar, your favorite bartender, and then let us know who has the Best Bartender.

Hey thinking of bartenders, waitresses, and the like, how about TIPS. Tips stand for To Insure Prompt Service. I think the idea may have started back when trains were the main form of transportation. But the world of TIPS has changed a lot and many of my “old guys” have a hard time keeping up. In the “old days” if you left a 10 percent tip that was big time. Nowadays really the sky is the limit. A $5, $10, even $20 tip, it happens all the time. Don’t even think about change, you have to round up to the nearest buck. The days of bringing out the calculator are long gone. Even if you just get a coffee, you have to leave a buck. If you are a shooter, or an old guy who wants the waitress to remember you or give you special attention, it’s nothing to leave a 100 percent tip! If a nice girl waits on your table all night, you have a $100 tab, 10 percent is $10 and in today’s world that is nothing. You drop $100 TIP and you become the man! Don’t get me wrong no one is cheaper than me or Bob, but if you want to play the part, you pay.

Olin Ezra had a cool column in the last issue of Detroit Live about John 5. John, a Grosse Point native has been playing with Rob Zombie and our friend drummer Tommy Cleftous. Tommy also grew up in the area and started out playing with his dads band Tommy C and Gamut. Then he got a gig with Mitch Ryder. From Mitch a stint with Bob Seger’s Alto Reed, to Ted Nugent, to Alice Cooper, to John 5 and Rob Zombie and now I see Jimmy Kimmel late night TV and there he is playing drums for OZZY! That really is a great success story, local kid does well. The music scène helped him and he gives back and helps the Detroit Live scène!

Man a whole column and didn’t mention Mr. Positive, Gonzo, Sykofish, Bill Cairo, Pistol Day Parade, Mike Carey, Ty Stone or Chain Reaction!
